8 Lessons in 19 Years – Part 1

Our board has accumulated 19 years of experience in what I refer to as the Policy Governance (R) Life Cycle:

  • discovering or being introduced to policy governance, then exploring and learning in depth about the model, its mindset and systematic approach;
  • preparing policies and readying the board and CEO for launch of this new system of governing;
  • launch and use of the model through the first year after launch, with its monitoring of policies for progress toward Ends and compliance with Means; and
  • sustaining the policy governance model through ongoing use and maintenance (a continuous cycle of monitoring and adjustment) in order to deliver owner-accountable governance for our community of owners.
